Come to the ICCVA in Florence
I hope that all of you are having a wonderful summer. This summer has been very special for me as my oldest, Catherine, has gotten married. Also, my younger two, Carolyn and Townsend, are home from college, and my wife, Cathy, and I are enjoying having a full house again. As we enter into August, which means Carolyn and Townsend will be back at college in a few weeks, naturally, I am turning my attention to my fall schedule. One of the events that I constantly look forward to is the opportunity to attend the International Congress on Cardiovascular Anesthesia (ICCVA). SCA is a significant cosponsor of this year’s event, which will be a joint European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiologists (EACTA) 2014 Annual Meeting and the 14th ICCVA. The meeting will be held in Florence, Italy, September 17–19.
The International Scientific Program Committee has created the theme for the meeting, Appropriate Care in the Face of Reduced Resources and Increased Morbidity. This meeting will emphasize the “tremendous opportunities that lie before us as we seek to translate scientific evidence into effective therapies.” The faculty will consist of thought leaders within our specialty from around the globe, including innovators who are transforming our ability to manage the critically ill patient in undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesia and critical care in a way that was undreamt of just a few years ago. Lectures by these notable speakers will be complimented by scientific and educational workshops spanning the broad spectrum of cardiothoracic and vascular anesthesiology and critical care. The workshops will address the most challenging clinical problems and provide interactive discussions on the latest techniques along with opportunities to learn about new and successful clinical therapies.
Over the years, I have used the ICCVA as a platform to highlight the exciting field of cardiothoracic anesthesiology to my three children. Each of them has travelled with me individually to an ICCVA meeting. It has been a wonderful father-child experience. When they heard that the meeting this year was in Florence, they all asked in unison, “Dad, am I going?” Without missing a beat, Cathy replied, “No, it’s my turn!”
Please make plans now to attend. It will be a wonderful experience. More information can be found at the conference website.
