President’s Message

Because I’m Happy

Portrait of Dr. Scott Reeves

The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists held its 36th Annual Meeting and Workshops in New Orleans from March 29 to April 2. Approximately 950 members participated, with more than 90% of all cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows in training in North America present. The educational mission of the society has never been stronger. This meeting had a special meaning for me on multiple fronts, hence the title of this month’s president’s message, “Because I’m Happy.”

As the catchy tune, “Happy,” by Pharrell Williams goes… (If you do not know the tune, please view the video at the link before reading on.)

It might seem crazy what I’m about to say […]
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

The meeting began with both Thoracic Anesthesia and Critical Care Symposia, led by Peter Slinger, MD, and Andrew Shaw, MB, FRCA, FCCM, respectively. Both were excellent and allowed a concentrated focus on their respective subspecialties.

Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do

The annual meeting then began on Saturday. Program Chair Kathy Glas, MD, MBA, FASE; Vice Chairs Andrew Shaw, MB, FRCA, FCCM, and Amanda Fox, MD, MPH; and the entire program committee put on a fabulous meeting. Joanne Conroy, MD, an anesthesiologist and chief medical officer of the Association of Academic Medical Centers, gave the keynote address, “Turbulent Times for Academic Medicine: Evolution of the Clinical Enterprise.”

This was the first of two annual meetings at which I have the honor to be the residing SCA President. I now know how proud and humble two of my fellow faculty members at the Medical University of South Carolina and mentors, Jerry Reves and John Waller, must have been as they served their terms as president.

Even though 2014’s annual meeting has just now finished, the program committee has already received board approval for SCA to host our 2015 annual meeting together with the International Congress of Cardiovascular Anesthesia (ICCVA) in Washington, DC, April 11–15, 2015. This will be a true global celebration of our specialty with speakers and attendees from all over the world, and the city will be phenomenal with its cherry trees in full bloom. The meeting location will be the brand new Marriott Marque Hotel, which opens this May. Please make plans now to attend this once-in-a-lifetime meeting.
