NewsletterJ. Earl Wynands, MDSCA 2002 Distinguished Service Award
The Society awarded its first Distinguished Service Award to Earl Wynands at the Annual Meeting in New York. This award is given to an individual who has made several contributions to the specialty of cardiovascular anesthesiology through research, education, service, or combinations of those activities. Dr. Wynands was a charter member of the Society in 1979, and rapidly became an active member and leader, serving as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee in 1984. He was President of the SCA from 1989-1991, which was a period of rapid growth in Society membership and activities. Dr. Wynands has served as author or co-author on over 80 peer-reviewed publications representing original research. His research has spanned a broad range of topics, but he has been most widely recognized for his research on clinical pharmacology. He has investigated anesthetic drugs and techniques in cardiac surgery as well as the clinical pharmacology of a variety of cardiac drugs including inotropes, vasopressors, and beta-adrenergic blockers, primarily in cardiac surgical patients. Dr. Wynands rose through the academic ranks to Professor of Anaesthesia and Surgery at McGill University, where he served on the faculty from 1961 to 1988. From 1970 though 1988 he was Chief of the Cardiac Division at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. He was Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Ottawa from 1988 through 1996. Dr. Wynands has served as President of the Canadian
Anesthetist's Society and received that society's Gold Medal Award. He also
