WORKSHOP - Sunday, May 6, 2001
Congenital Heart Disease Workshop: Pediatric and Adult Considerations

(Workshop limited to 150 registrants)

Educational Objectives: This workshop will provide the participant with informative didactic lectures and discussions on a broad range of topics relevant to pediatric cardiac anesthesia. Question sessions have been scheduled to allow participant feedback and interaction with faculty. The topics this year result from discussion with past workshop attendees, and written suggestions on prior workshop evaluations. This year, a discussion regarding training and accreditation in pediatric cardiac anesthesia will replace the previous Pro-Con debate format. As no formal guidelines for training have been stipulated, the attendees are encouraged to participate in a lively and spirited discussion. Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have an understanding of: 1) the current role for high-dose opioid anesthesia and utility of commonly used intravenous anesthetic agents for congenital cardiac surgery; 2) management issues for premature and very-low birth weight neonates undergoing cardiac surgery; 3) utility of transesophageal echocardiography following congenital cardiac surgery; and 4) current trends and recommendations for training and accreditation for pediatric cardiac anesthesia.
