The Work of the SCA Foundation

By Joyce A. Wahr, MD

Established in October of 2007, the SCA Foundation has enjoyed a remarkable level of success in fulfilling the “mission of excellence in the care of patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures through education and research.” As detailed in our Annual Report available online, the generous support of our donors has enabled continuation of respected programs such as the SCA Research Grants, successful implementation of new initiatives (FOCUS), and the development of exciting new programs (fellows’ leadership program.) During our first two years of existence, we have raised some $4.8 million to support these initiatives.

Volunteer with the SCA Foundation

The SCA Foundation is looking for a volunteer with a legal background, preferably with a J.D., to assist us with some legal advice from time to time and to review contracts. If you are interested in getting involved with the SCA Foundation, please contact our Executive Director, John Melleky.

FOCUS Presentation at the ASA Meeting

The FOCUS Initiative is a part of the program of the ASA Annual Meeting. Join us on Sunday, October 17 at 10:00 am -12:00 noon pacific time at the San Diego Convention Center, room Upper 1A for the presentation, “Patient Safety in the Complex Environment of the Cardiac Operating Room."

Panelists for the presentation include Joyce A. Wahr, MD, Jeffrey Cooper, MD, Elizabeth A. Martinez, MD, Alan F. Merry, MD and Bruce D. Spiess, MD.

Support the SCA Foundation

Donate to the SCA Foundation and support our research grants, education programs such as the Kaplan Fellows Leadership program or the Earl Wynands Lecture Fund, the FOCUS Initiative, and the creation of a cardiovascular anesthesiology module for the STS database.
