Why Me?...Who else?
The SCA’s mission statement says that we are an international organization of physicians, which promotes excellence in patient care through education and research in perioperative care for patients undergoing cardiothoracic and vascular procedures. The work of the Society is done by its members, so to achieve these goals, we rely on the active participation of the membership.
Every year, there are many opportunities for members to contribute their talents, expertise, and experience as cardiovascular anesthesiologists. Committee membership is an excellent way to participate, as these committees play a vital role for the Society.
Leadership positions and support for the SCA Foundation are also very important and valuable ways to become involved in the SCA. One of the first rules of the Columbia Business School is to never underestimate the value of non-economic compensation. This rule certainly applies to the SCA.
Despite the lack of monetary compensation, one of the benefits of SCA involvement is great personal gratification. Our Society is a productive member of the academic medical community; and as such, it is very reassuring to know the projects of the Society in which you participate will be completed and successful. Another benefit of participation is that these activities can be useful in academic or institutional promotion.
Perhaps most importantly, participation in the SCA activities helps build enduring professional relationships with colleagues throughout the country and the world. Think of the SCA as your real-world social networking “website.” You never know when it will be helpful to know a cardiac anesthesiologist when you are away from home.
This year the Society needs nominations for the President-Elect, the Secretary/Treasurer, two members of the Board of Directors, two members of the CME Committee, and two members of the Nominating Committee. We look forward to your nominations. Your vote in the elections this winter will be critical in shaping the future of our Society. These elections are usually decided by only a few votes and unfortunately only a small percentage of our membership votes. This makes your vote even more important.
