"It is troubling that Dr. Christopherson dismissed the recent article regarding pulmonary artery catheter use in major operative cases in patients over 60 years of age. This study should be the final "nail in the coffin" for PA catheters. It is interesting that NO study has ever shown a benefit to patients with their use, yet PA placement continues. Dr. Christopherson did fail to mention that the group with PA catheters had a higher resource use as well as a clinically and statistically increased incidence of pulmonary embolus. The PA catheter group also had a higher incidence of complications related to placement. So why do we not believe the studies?"
